Barcelona: 1 day, 3 ways

How to spend a day in Barcelona

Published on 08 Apr 2026

Barcelona is a vibrant city, home to iconic architecture, bustling city life and golden, sandy beaches. It also boasts an abundance of culture, and its Mediterranean climate makes it a popular destination for many. If you’re visiting Barcelona as part of a cruise, your time in the city might be limited, but that certainly doesn’t mean that you can’t make the most of it. To help you experience the very best of what the city has to offer, we’ve put together three itineraries to show you how to spend a day here.

Things to do in Barcelona

Option one:

  • Marvel at the Sagrada Familia
  • Stroll through Park Güell
  • Explore the Gothic Quarter

Marvel at the Sagrada Familia

Barcelona is a city famed for its incredible Gothic architecture, designed by Antoni Gaudí, and arguably none more famous than the Sagrada Familia. Gaudí dedicated his life to creating this architectural masterpiece and shaping the basilica into what it is today, a work that continued long after his death. A century after his death, the Sagrada Familia reached a major milestone when the tower of the central spire was completed in February 2026. Despite this, the building is still not considered finished, and works are expected to continue until 2035. The fact that it has been unfinished has never deterred visitors; in fact, it has done the opposite. Many flock to the city to visit the famous landmark time and time again, enjoying seeing how it has progressed.

Stroll through Park Güell

After you’ve finished marvelling at the Sagrada Familia, you might like to visit another Gaudí masterpiece, Park Güell. Not only is the park one of the largest green spaces in Barcelona, but it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring colourful mosaics, nature-inspired architecture and incredible views over the city. Here, you might spend an afternoon strolling along, visiting the house that Gaudí called home, and taking in the impressive sights.

Explore the Gothic Quarter

Step back in time as you wander through one of Barcelona’s most famous neighbourhoods, the Gothic Quarter. Navigate the maze of narrow medieval streets and witness the impressive Roman ruins and Gothic architecture, including the wondrous Barcelona Cathedral. Feeling peckish after a busy morning sightseeing? You’ll find various modern tapas bars and traditional cafes. The Gothic Quarter is popular at all hours of the day, but many comment on the magical atmosphere that evening brings. From organised cocktail bar crawls that guide you through the hotspots and hidden gems to mythical legend tours that explore the city’s medieval and supernatural history, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. For something less structured and more low-key, you might choose to watch musicians and street performers in the square.

Option two:

  • Enjoy an afternoon on the beach
  • Stop for tapas
  • Rooftop bar hop

Enjoy an afternoon on the beach

With up to ten official beaches, Barcelona offers a unique blend of bustling city life and coastal charm. When the skies are blue and the sun is shining, there’s nothing quite like spending an afternoon relaxing on the beach. Whether you’re getting lost in a good book, enjoying a picnic with loved ones, or simply watching the waves lap against the golden shores, there’s no better setting. Even in cooler temperatures, a stroll along the beach is a popular pastime for many. One of the most popular beaches is Barceloneta Beach, which boasts a lively atmosphere and is located close to bars and restaurants.

Stop for tapas or paella

No trip to Barcelona is complete without indulging in tapas or tucking into a delicious paella. You’ll find various restaurants and eateries dotted across the city, each offering an atmosphere and menu that suits everyone. Sample quintessential Spanish and Catalan favourites as you order an array of small plates, from patatas bravas, crispy fried potatoes served with spicy salsa and aioli, and pimientos de padrón, small, fried green peppers topped with sea salt, to cured meats and perfectly cooked seafood accompanied by a flavoursome sauce. For something more hearty yet equally traditional, a paella is another popular sharing meal. For some travellers, nothing beats venturing out and finding the best place to eat. However, if you’re not sure where to begin, you might choose to join an organised tapas tour.

Rooftop bar hop

Once you’re suitably full on delicious Spanish and Catalan cuisine, you might be in the mood for a drink with a view. Barcelona’s stunning skyline is best enjoyed from above, and the city is home to plenty of stylish rooftop bars offering panoramic views. It serves as the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing and experience Barcelona’s vibrant nightlife from a different perspective.

Option three:

  • Start your day at La Rambla
  • Visit La Boqueria Market
  • See the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

Start your day at La Rambla

Beat the crowds and begin your day with a walk along La Rambla, one of Barcelona’s most famous boulevards, in the morning. Lined with shops, cafés and entertaining street performers, it’s always buzzing with energy. Many tourists choose to visit at least once to truly get a feel for the city’s lively spirit.

Visit La Boqueria Market

Just off La Rambla, you’ll find the famous La Boqueria Market, which is widely considered to be a must-visit for foodies. With roots dating back to the 13th century, it offers a fantastic atmosphere filled with colourful stalls showcasing fresh produce, local delicacies, and traditional Catalan flavours. Sip a freshly squeezed juice, snack on tapas, and pick up flavoursome ingredients as you explore.

See the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

End your day at the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, where water, light and music come together in a spectacular evening show. Located at the foot of Montjuïc hill, this popular attraction offers a memorable experience for visitors of all ages. Arrive early to get a good spot and enjoy the atmosphere as the fountains come to life.
